This is a competitive handicap with several last time out winners in contention. The recent winners have gone up in the weights or have penalties to carry, which may tilt the scales in favour of Wise Eagle, who ran his best race of the season but went down by the narrowest of margins to Glasses Up over course and distance last week.
He has also been raised but the increased mark does not kick in until next week and so he is clearly well in here.
Wise Eagle has improved all season, already winning four times, but he doesn’t seem to have peaked just yet. His trainer is trying headgear and switching to Paul Hanagan in the saddle, so is clearly trying to eke out further improvement.
He looks a banker to follow up his Goodwood win under a penalty here as he looks to have landed on the perfect race.
At least three of his rivals are confirmed front-runners and that will give Lord Riddiford something to run at. He was guided through a big field by the unstoppable Hollie Doyle at Goodwood last time (watch above) but Jason Hart returns in the saddle on Friday, which is of no concern as he has won on him three times already.
Lord Riddiford runs (and wins) off higher marks than here on the all-weather and has been successful at up to Listed level. Earlier in the year he backed up victories within a fortnight so it is difficult to see him being beaten.
Hopefully, Jason Hart can land a quick double in what is likely to be another handicap set to be run at a brisk pace.
Gweedore won twice last season and has been on a progressive upward curve for some time. He hit winning form over this trip at Ayr last month in a race that has already produced a couple of subsequent winners.
The handicapper has raised him only 2lb for that victory, which looks lenient to my eyes.
Hart is taking over from 5lb claimer Andrew Breslin here and Gweedore will certainly be suited by the likely pace scenario over a course and distance he scored at twice in quick succession at this time last year.
