There is action at Beverley, Kempton and Gowran on the channel on Wednesday and my focus is on the first-named meeting, where I have three selections.
2.10 Beverley: Byron’s Choice
He was only eighth last time at Thirsk but he didn’t run to badly (beaten less than three lengths) and had previously been beaten a head by Queens Sergeant over Wednesday’s course and distance in 0-85 company. A repeat of that effort, at the same level may be enough to win this one.
He is 1lb lower than when last successful, at York, and regular rider Paul Mulrennan is riding excellently at present.
Byron’s Choice seems best pouncing from off the pace, which is not the norm for horses who do well at this track, but he has a good record here and this promises to be run at an honest gallop.
5.15 Beverley: Hua Mulan
Danny Tudhope may have to make his own running on Hua Mulan, a winner here on her latest start, but such tactics are generally a plus rather than a minus at this venue and so I will not be disappointed if I see the combination making the pace.
Joe Fanning won on the filly last time here, when she flashed her tail. That was probably due to inexperience because she definitely didn’t shirk anything and won decisively. The 6lb penalty she carries would not have stopped her winning last time and I doubt it will here.
5.50 Beverley: Kesarina
Her very useful half-brother, Zaaki, is starting to show signs of losing enthusiasm for the game but if this filly has got anything like his ability then she should win a 0-70 maiden fillies’ handicap with some ease.
The signs are good was not being knocked about in her first two starts and last time, at Sandown on handicap debut, she shaped very much as though this extra two furlongs will suit. I expect her to show the mark to be lenient.
