Dave Nevison's free horse racing tips for Thursday

There’s some splendid action on the Channel on Thursday with several of those in action at Sandown’s feature evening meeting no doubt hoping it will be a stepping stone to Royal Ascot.

I’ve got a couple of fancies on the card plus another at Haydock.

3.10 Haydock: Sound Reason

May have hit on the perfect race to regain the winning thread and has the look of a sprinter to keep on side this season.

He did well as a three-year-old, winning three times and proving consistent throughout. He is lightly raced and his comeback run certainly hinted he would come on for the run when staying-on in fourth in a 0-90 at Hamilton.

He promises to get a fierce pace to run at, and his best runs have come in well-run races. I expect him to be cutting through the pack late on. He is on a 1lb lower mark, is very slightly down in grade and Kevin Stott has been on board for all his wins.

5.40 Sandown: The Whipmaster

Held his own last season in much higher-grade handicaps than this one and showed his appreciation for a drop down into this grade with a win at Lingfield last time.

Ryan Moore, who has won on him in the past, takes over for this switch to turf. Even off a couple of pounds higher than he won off last time, he is still below a mark he ran really well off at Goodwood last season.

He only runs at this trip these days and his trainer, Gary Moore, has had plenty winners at these Sandown evening meets.

6.50 Sandown: Enemy

Is certainly not the only stayer that has been improved by moving to Ian Williams yard, but could easily be the best to judge by his four runs for the yard.

He showed signs he had settled well with a good run in Meydan early this year but stepped up greatly last time when an unlucky loser in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot.

He just didn’t get the gaps when he needed them behind Princess Zoe in that Group Three event. I fancy he and might well improve past Quickthorn, who was runner-up that day, in this similar grade race.
