Dave Nevison shares his best bets for Goodwood and Haydock on Friday. Watch how they fare on Racing TV on a day when the channel will also be showing the action from Catterick, The Curragh and Downpatrick.

1.20 Haydock: Legendary Day

Hughie Morrison’s four-year-old was on many lists to follow last season but after a couple of wins he signed off with a couple of dismal efforts and the promise was unfulfilled.

However, he reappeared in a small field at Nottingham recently and certainly showed enough to suggest he was over what ailed him last term.

He may well be one to be with for a while at least this season, and has definitely looked as though he might get this trip on a couple of occasions. Morrison is in excellent form and Hollie Doyle will be aboard Legendary Day for the first time.

2.45 Goodwood: Marshal Dan

The unbeaten William Haggas trained Montassib is trading at short odds after successive wins some distance apart.

We might get value each way looking elsewhere and there is a good case for having a few quid on Heather Main’s useful seven-year-old.

Marshall Dan may well be suited by Goodwood as he likes to lead and it seems likely he will be able to get to the front easier than he did at Musselburgh on his seasonal reappearance last time, when he used up a lot of early energy before settling in front and running very well to be third.

Heather Main has her stable in excellent form and Marshall Dan can be expected to come on for his recent run. He is only 1lb higher than when winning at Sandown last September.

4.30 Goodwood: Mellow Magic

Several of these ran in a similar race over 14f here three weeks ago. Saratoga Gold took the spoils but to my mind Mellow Magic, the runner-up, looks the most likely to enjoy the extra 2f here.

He is 5lb better off with Saratoga Gold, who beat him 2 ½ lengths last time, which will definitely bring them closer. But it’s the booking of crack 7lb claimer Harry Davies (rode stayer Nate The Grate for the yard on Saturday) that looks the icing on the cake.

Mellow Magic ended last season in form and began with a win this term before his second here. The step up looks like it may bring about improvement.
