1.30 York: Salam Dubawi (E/W)

I fully respect the chance of Ralph Beckett’s Beagle Bay as he still looks the up-and-coming runner in a field of seemingly exposed runners. However, I can’t back him at around 2-1 after an absence of three months despite the hot stable form.

I would much rather hit on one to get a place at big odds and despite some unflattering form figures I feel there is a place case for Jim Goldie’s Salam Dubawi. The four-year-old won off a mark of 81 in May on what was only his second run for the yard. He has a few unplaced efforts to his name since but has often had bad draws or other reasonable excuses, and I feel he is in better form than appears. He was third in a similar big field event at this track in the summer but was demoted to fifth for interference.

Last time out at Newmarket he hit the front in the Cambridgeshire before fading and there is a chance he may have an easier time on the lead in this from his good draw, and it is possible Salam Dubawi could be suited by this return to a mile. He is a pound below his winning mark and Lauren Young is able to claim her full 5lbs so he is certainly well enough weighted.

4.25 York: Toca Madera

Toca Madera might be the class act in this handicap and has serious chance of making all to land his third win of this season.

David O’Meara’s five-year-old gelding started the season favourably weighted and after a very good run in a similar race here in May has progressed back through the ranks, with only the odd blip along the way.

He won a conditions race at Beverley quite comfortably last time out and, given a very favourable draw here (and with several slow starters alongside him), he should be able to settle nicely on the lead.

Unless there is a downpour and the going goes very soft, I expect Danny Tudhope to make all.

5.20 Newmarket: Bintola

Bintola has been generally progressive on fast ground this year with her only disappointment coming when racing on softer ground on her penultimate start.

Harry Charlton’s filly bounced back when upped to this trip at this course last time out and ran really well to be third beaten just over a length. I feel the handicapper has been generous in dropping her a pound for that good effort and with the yard in top form at present Bintola is poised to land another handicap with the Newmarket ground remaining on the fast side.
