It is still a bit too early for me to be thinking about having many bets over the jumps and though I’d found one I liked at Stratford on Monday, the odds-on price about Maire Banrigh made limited appeal.
I did have three fancies at Pontefract but unfortunately that meeting was abandoned on Monday morning because of a waterlogged track.
At Newcastle I’ve got one fancy at a nice price on the evening card, which is:
Even a quick glance at the career record of Shepherd’s Purse shows that he is not an easy horse to win with but it’s also clear he’s on a good mark at present – 4lb lower than when winning at Ayr in June.
He looked like he was still in decent form when failing to get a clear run at Beverley three starts back and on his two subsequent starts he’s been held back by slow starts.
A tardy break could once again be his undoing here but a strong pace looks likely and this race may set up for a closer so a slow break might not be the same hindrance it has been while his high draw in stall 10 could be an advantage.
