Cheltenham countdown: Scarlet Dragon on course for Supreme

Thu 1 Mar 2018

Smart Flat performer Scarlet Dragon is still on target for the Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle - despite defeat on his hurdling debut last Saturday.

Alan King's charge was no match for impressive winner Global Citizen in the Dovecote at Kempton but ran on well to finish second.

That gave connections enough encouragement to continue with their Cheltenham Festival plan.

Owner Henry Ponsonby said: "The plan is still to head to Cheltenham, all being well. We were really pleased with his run. He wants a strong pace so it is looking likely he will run in the Supreme Novices'.

"I think if the winner hadn't run, we'd have been a good winner and probably be second favourite.

"He'll have learned a lot. He was just too keen and Wayne Hutchinson had to get him settled. He jumped immaculately for a horse having his first run over hurdles - all bar one, which he kicked out of the ground.

"For a horse first time out at that level, there was a lot to like."

Ponsonby will also be cheering on the King-trained Who Dares Wins, third to Supasundae in the Coral Cup last season, in the Pertemps Final.

He said: "Who Dares Wins will go for the Pertemps and we're very sweet on his chances.

"He was third in the Coral Cup last year and that hasn't worked out too badly."
