Charlie Fellowes to take Futurity Trophy route with King Ottokar

Wed 24 Oct 2018

Charlie Fellowes is favouring an ambitious tilt at Saturday’s Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster with King Ottokar.

The Motivator colt made a winning debut when scoring by a nose at Newbury last month and has the option of returning to the Berkshire circuit for this weekend’s Molson Coors Stakes – better known as the Horris Hill.

However, Fellowes is leaning towards sending his charge to Town Moor in a bid for Group One glory.

He said: “We are leaning towards Doncaster at the moment. The ground is good to soft in both places and the good to soft over seven furlongs at Newbury might be on the sharp side, so we are looking at the mile.

“It is obviously a big step in grade, but the form of his maiden could not be working any better (fifth and sixth won since).

“He has been really good at home and I do think he is capable of taking his chance in a race like this.”

Fellowes also provided an update on his Melbourne Cup contender Prince Of Arran, who is pencilled in to run just three days before the ‘race that stops a nation’ in the Lexus Stakes on November 3.

He said: “He will head for the Lexus. He’s in great form.

“The Lexus is only three days before the Melbourne Cup, but we took the stance we should aim him at this as it is the race he is most likely to win.

“I think the mile and a half round Flemington, with it’s long straight and it being a fair track, will suit him, and it’s a ‘win and you’re in’ race for the Melbourne Cup.

“It’s not ideal running him three days before, but winners of the Lexus have a good record in the race.”
