Charlie Appleby's Qewy strikes Down Under again

Wed 1 Nov 2017

Charlie Appleby's Qewy landed another notable Australian prize by winning the Bendigo Cup.

The seven-year-old, who won over hurdles for John Ferguson in February 2015, landed the Geelong Cup and the Sandown Cup during the last Spring Carnival Down Under and regained the winning thread.

Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, Qewy hit the front over a furlong out and was always holding Kiwia, scoring by a head.

Qewy finished fourth in the Melbourne Cup 12 months ago but his participation next Tuesday is up in the air as the original plan had been for him to defend his Sandown Cup crown.

Travelling head lad Chris Connett told "It's great to be back at Bendigo, especially after last year, and for Qewy to come out and win like he did is great.

"There were a couple of moments where we had our heart in our mouth but he stays all day and he shows his heart and he ran right through the line.

"He was made to battle but the second horse is a nice, progressive horse.

"That's the decision (Melbourne Cup) we've got to make now, I'll speak to Charlie and we'll make sure he pulls up fine.

McEvoy said: "It's a big call whether to run him in the Cup but he stays so well so it's up to Charlie and he'd have to be a top-10 chance in the Cup."
