Charlie Appleby was on Monday crowned Champion Flat Trainer for the first time in his career.
Appleby, 46, a retained trainer for Godolphin based at Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket, has enjoyed a remarkable season with 17 Group/Grade 1 victories worldwide, including five British Group 1s and four QIPCO British Champions Series races.
The Trainers’ Championship runs from 1st January - 31st December 2021 and is based on prize money won in that period. However, with Appleby on £4,888,314 (as of before racing Monday 6th December) worth of prize money and £570,507 ahead of his nearest challenger Andrew Balding, fellow trainers and title rivals Balding, John/Thady Gosden and William Haggas have conceded the title with less than a month of the Championship remaining.

Appleby was announced as champion at the HWPA Derby Awards at the Royal Lancaster in London.
On winning his first Trainers’ Championship, Appleby said: “It’s huge for myself and the team at Moulton Paddocks. Most importantly, from the get-go back in 2013, we set our stall out on what we’d like to try to achieve and that was getting the success back into Godolphin and getting the big race winners on the board, while also taking on stallions and broodmares to bolster the future.
“We began growing steadily with winners and then the nicer horses started to come into the yard. Thankfully, we’ve been able to make the most of it. The success over the last three to four years has improved year on year after a breakthrough year in 2018 with Masar winning the Derby and Cross Counter winning the Melbourne Cup.
“Going into the start of this season we were confident our three-year-olds had wintered well as two-year-olds, but like everyone in the spring you’re trying to get a feeling of what you’re dealing with. We felt early doors that our Middle Distance horses were coming to the fore and on the evidence of the Trials we were very competitive. We went on to win the Derby, the Irish Derby, the King George and ended up with the St Leger on British soil, so we really did tick all the boxes.”
Appleby spoke to Lydia Hislop after Adayar's Derby victory
2021 saw standout performances from several of Appleby’s stars, including Adayar, who became the first Cazoo Derby winner since Galileo in 2001 to follow up with victory in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes at Ascot, partnered by Adam Kirby and then latterly William Buick.
Appleby added to Great British Racing: “I’d have to say the King George win gave us the most satisfaction this year. We were very lucky to win the Derby again, but to repeat history in terms of
Adayar going on to win the King George, which hadn’t been done in 20 years, that was a very proud moment for the team. A lot of people here at Moulton Paddocks took a lot of pleasure from that.”
Appleby also succeeded in landing the world’s oldest Classic in 2021 for the first time, the Cazoo St Leger at Doncaster, with Hurricane Lane, who had previously claimed Group 1 prizes in Ireland (Irish Derby) and France (Grand Prix de Paris).
Also pivotal to the Newmarket-based trainer’s success was Creative Force’s landmark win in the QIPCO British Champion Sprint Stakes on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot, which saw the trainer pull further clear of trainer Andrew Balding and his Kingsclere team in cumulative prize money, with just over two months of the year remaining.
Overall, Appleby has had 113 domestic winners, at a strike rate of 29%, and 196 places in 2021 from 389 runs, with further international top-level success in Canada, France, Ireland and a famous treble at the Breeders’ Cup in Del Mar, USA to top off a stellar year for the trainer.
Newmarket-based jockey Buick, retained rider for Appleby and close runner-up in this year’s Flat Jockeys’ Championship, said, “It’s a fantastic achievement for Charlie and very well deserved. I feel very privileged to be working so closely with him and the great team at Moulton Paddocks and Godolphin. Charlie’s management of his horses and team has been a pleasure to witness and his CV as a young trainer is outstanding. Many congratulations Charlie.”
Charlie’s wife, Aisling, said: “As a family all five of us are very proud of Charlie and this award. He may have missed a few Pony Club meets and bath times but this makes it all worthwhile!”
Hugh Anderson, Chief Operating Officer at Godolphin (UK and Dubai) said: “Everyone at Godolphin is delighted for Charlie and very proud of his success this season. It has been a superb year for Godolphin and he has led the charge with his handling of superstars like Adayar,
Hurricane Lane and Native Trail as well as his exceptional campaigning across the Atlantic and elsewhere. He fully deserves the accolade of Champion Trainer and now joins the greats of the sport. We couldn’t be happier for him and his whole team.”

Rishi Persad speaks to Kevin Buckley, Kevin Blake and more following today's Betfred Derby draw.
It could prove a fitting omen if Benvenuto Cellini was able to provide Aidan O’Brien a record-extending 12th Betfred Derby from stall 12 in the Epsom Classic on Saturday.
The Chester Vase winner is one of four for the master of Ballydoyle among the 14 declarations for the mile and a half feature and a race O’Brien has proved unstoppable in recently, as he seeks a fourth successive win after the victories of Auguste Rodin (2023), City Of Troy (2024) and Lambourn (2025).
Benvenuto Cellini will be joined by stablemates Pierre Bonnard (eight), Action (11) and Christmas Day (five), with juvenile Group One winner Pierre Bonnard held in the highest regard despite being yet to strike this term and the latter pair arriving having finished second and third respectively in the Dante.
Speaking at the Derby draw held at The Peninsula Hotel in London, Coolmore’s UK representative Kevin Buckley said: “I think Benvenuto Cellini is a worthy favourite and we would be happy enough with his draw in 12 which is the same one Australia and Serpentine won out of so you would have to be happy.
“I’ve always had a personal soft spot for Pierre Bonnard, but I was equally impressed with what Benvenuto Cellini did at Chester and I thought that was the perfect prep for the Derby.
“It is interesting Christmas Day is drawn five and that is the same stall his sire Camelot came out of when he won the Derby. He was third in the Dante behind Action, who is closely-related to Lambourn and won the Derby last year, so we have some nice runners this year and we’re looking forward to it.”
The winner at York that day was Item, who is one of two in the race for Andrew Balding alongside A Taste Of Glory (seven), and is regarded by the bookmakers as the most likely challenger to the Ballydoyle-trained favourite.
Item will exit from stall three that New Approach won from in 2008, as the Kingsclere handler attempts to replicate the achievement of his late father Ian who won the Derby with the famous Mill Reef in 1971.
The trainer’s wife Anna Lisa Balding said: “The Dante was a good place to start and you can do nothing about the draw, it’s all about what you do with it.
“He’s drawn three but is in great form. I think he looked pretty good in the Dante and everyone was bigging up the race before the race. He really delivered on the day and finished strong. He might have been a little bit green in front so hopefully he will have learned plenty.
“I suppose the one thing for us is we haven’t quite had the conditions weather-wise to have done as much with him on the grass at home that we would have liked to have done.
“It is Andrew’s dream to win the Derby, he’s only 54 and has a few more years to do it, but he will keep trying and you never know.”
Lingfield Derby Trial winner Maltese Cross will be just a fifth Derby runner for William Haggas who won the race with Shaamit 30 year’s ago. He will exit stall one often referred to as the ‘coffin box’ but successfully navigated by the imperious City Of Troy in 2024.
Maltese Cross made it two from two for the year when edging out Ralph Beckett’s Bay Of Brilliance (nine) at Lingfield and they will lock horns again on the Surrey Downs, with Charlie Johnston’s Ancient Egypt (10) another British-trained contender having impressed in the Newmarket Stakes.
Also heading to Epsom on a high is Joseph O’Brien’s James J Braddock (13) who having downed the aforementioned Pierre Bonnard at Leopardstown, will seek to land another telling blow in a race his handler won twice as a jockey aboard Camelot (2012) and Australia (2014).
Jane Chapple-Hyam and Faye Bramley will both try to become the first female trainer to win the Derby when saddling Balzac (two) and Rebel Rocker (14) respectively, with the field completed by Karl Burke’s 4.3million guineas yearling Poker (four) and Richard Hannon’s Alderman (six), who both head into the race as maidens.
