Owen Burrows pondering plans for Shabaaby after successful Haydock return

Owen Burrows will consider options at home and abroad for Shabaaby following his successful start to the campaign at Haydock.

The Kyllachy colt looked an exciting prospect after winning twice as a juvenile, but his three-year-old campaign failed to live up to expectations.

However, making his first start since last July, having been gelded in the meantime, Shabaaby displayed a willing attitude to make a victorious reappearance in a conditions event on Merseyside and is now likely to have his sights raised.

Burrows said: “It was very pleasing to see him do that after the promise he showed as a young horse.

“Last year was disappointing, but he needs a dig in the ground and we obviously had the driest summer on record.

“He ran on Lockinge day and was third, but he felt the fast ground and, like a lot of mine, for the rest of the season he was never 100 per cent.

“So, we had him gelded and he spent some time at Shadwell and it’s done him the world of good.

“The rest of the season could be tricky as he’s very ground dependent. The Chipchase Stakes could be a race for him at Newcastle, but that is not until the end of June.

“I’ll have a chat to the team, but he might be one we look at taking to Ireland or France in search of some softer ground.”
