Betfred Derby: Persad, Dwyer and Carson give us their 1-2-3s

After the draw for the 2025 Betfred Derby was made at Epsom Picturehouse, Alex Scott spoke to Rishi Persad, Martin Dwyer and Willie Carson, and got their predictions for Saturday's big race.

Rishi Persad's prediction

1 - Ruling Court
The horse I like most for the race is Ruling Court, the draw has only confirmed my support of him. Stall seven looks excellent and I know there is a doubt about the trip for him, but he settles nicely, relaxes through his races and he looks uncomplicated.
William Buick is riding with so much confidence and I like a jockey in the Derby that is riding with a clear mind. The way he is riding now is the clearest mind of all riders in the weighing room so I am happy to have him on side on the Guineas winner going into the Derby.
2 - Pride Of Arras
I think he represents a touch of class. The way he ran in the Dante on his second start was impressive so I like him a lot, but the draw is slightly awkward for him in 16.
3 - Nightwalker
I've always liked him. I liked him as a two-year-old when he was trained by Sir Michael Stoute, he was still very green and was hitting the line hard in most of his starts.
He's done that again in the Feilden and the Dante. Stepping up in trip looks to be a positive to me and he is learning every time he runs. His draw looks good.

Martin Dwyer's prediction

1 - Delacroix
I think he will win and has less boxes to tick for me. I think he will stay well; he is a half-brother to a 1m6f winner.
I thought he was impressive at Leopardstown, has progressed with each run this year, and has been handed a good draw in stall 14.
2 - Ruling Court
Well, I agree with Rishi, I think the classiest horse in the race is Ruling Court, but I disagree in terms of his stamina. I think he over-travels, I think a mile and a half will test him. I think he will run a mighty race but might finish second.
3 - Pride Of Arras
There is lots of improvement to come from him after winning the Dante at York on his second start. He has a bit of class.

Willie Carson's prediction

1 - Delacroix
He would be my number one. He is going to stay the trip and is solid, and has Ryan Moore on.
2 - Ruling Court
He has the ability but I am frightened of the distance. I am worried about the mile and a half, but mind you, the Guineas was always said to be the best trial for the Derby.
3 - Stanhope Gardens
He was half a length behind Delacroix as a two-year-old and has had a quiet preparation in the Salisbury race. I think he will be placed.
Carson also gave me a typically forthright view when I asked about what he thought of Desert Flower in Friday's Oaks. "She won't be beaten," he said.
