Best Solution punched his ticket to the Melbourne Cup after he registered a gritty success in the Princess Of Wales’s Arqana Racing Club Stakes at Newmarket.

Last seen finishing fifth in the Dubai Sheema Classic behind Hawkbill, Saeed bin Suroor’s charge saw the trip out strongly as he held the determined challenge off the well-backed Mirage Dancer.

Having seen Charlie Appleby enjoy Derby and Royal Ascot successes this season for Godolphin, Bin Suroor has been quiet by his standards, but appears to have a Group One horse on his hands once more.

Mirage Dancer stuck at his task gamely having looked in danger of being swallowed up, but he ultimately went down by half a length to the 6-1 winner, ridden by Pat Cosgrave.

Best Solution was raced off a handicap mark of 116, having won a handicap at Meydan off 115, and the trainer is looking down under for his gutsy winner.

“We gave him a break after he finished fifth in Dubai,” said Bin Suroor.

“Today was the race for him, he’d been working well in the morning. There was a question mark about the ground before the race, but when I spoke to the jockey he said the ground was fine for him.

“I told him not to rush early, keep him relaxed, because whatever happens he’ll improve a lot for this.

“I’m always looking for Group One winners, but Group Twos are all right.

“He’s entered in the King George and the Juddmonte International, but I think the Irish St Leger might be next.

“I'm looking for a Group One for him, possibly overseas, including Australia where he could be a Melbourne Cup horse. Horses that do well over a mile-and-a-quarter or mile-and-a-half often do well in that race.

“He's been placed in Group Ones abroad so hopefully he can get his head in front in one soon.”

Andrew Balding has done well down under with horses such as Side Glance, and Duretto could also be heading to Flemington.

“I’m very pleased with him. He is a high-class horse. He is rated 114 and it is a bit insulting that he was 25/1, really," he said.

“He’s run a really good race and we will have to look at our Australian options now and work back from that.

“The intention was to win a nice race here (in Europe) and then go to Melbourne. It is an expensive trip and we want to make sure we have the horse of the right sort of calibre, which he seems to be.

“We’ll work back, and he’ll probably have one more run in Europe beforehand.”

Ryan Moore tried all he could to get Mirage Dancer up on the line, but to no avail and trainer Sir Michael Stoute is making no immediate plans.

“It was a good performance – a very good performance, and he ran a super race.

“Going back to a mile-and-a-half suits him,” he said.

He added: “Trip-wise, you can do anything with him. There are no excuses. He just found one a little bit better than him on the day.

“And he doesn’t mind this fast ground – ground conditions don’t bother him. We have time to think now before making plans.”
