Battalion on the easy list following Southwell fall on hurdling bow

Mon 26 Feb 2018

Plans for Battalion have been shelved while the smart Flat performer recovers from a crashing fall at the final flight on his hurdling debut at Southwell on Sunday.

It had been hoped the eight-year-old might be aimed at the Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival if he took to the new discipline.

However, any possible targets are on hold for the time being after Battalion suffered a tired tumble at the last obstacle in a two-mile novices' hurdle. He had made the running to that point.

Trainer Jamie Osborne reports the Authorized gelding to fine, apart from the obvious effects of a fall.

"He's a bit stiff and sore, but he's going to be fine," said the Lambourn handler.

"It was one of those things. I think realistically it was a bit of a culture shock for him on that slow, tacky ground and he got a bit tired.

"It was a shame what happened, but all plans are shelved for now. We'll just see how he is in the next few days."
