Racing at Ballinrobe had to be abandoned after just three races on Monday evening due to issues with the racing surface.
A track inspection was called before race four at the County Mayo track, with a deputation of jockeys called into the stewards’ room after some had voiced their concerns over “track issues”.
Trainers were then sought to give their opinion before the decision was made to call off proceedings.
The meeting got off to a flying start for Ado McGuinness, with the trainer landing the first two races.
Military Angel obliged as the 11-4 favourite in the opening Ballinrobe Racecourse Claiming Race under Shane Foley, before 11-1 shot Final Treat ran out a decisive winner of the On-Course Vets Fillies Maiden in the hands of Chris Hayes.
McGuinness said of the latter: “She came from William Haggas’ and we got her a month before Galway and she ran a cracker there.
“She’s a really nice filly and she’s very well-bred (a half-sister to Finsceal Beo) and to win a maiden with her makes her very valuable to Paul (Cashman, owner).
“It’s his first horse ever with me and hopefully we’ll get some black type with her at some stage.”
Fresh from Alpha Centauri’s brilliant display in France on Sunday, Jessica Harrington and Colm O’Donoghue combined to win what turned out to be the final race of the evening, with Still Standing (5-2) claiming the Burleigh Accountancy Irish EBF Handicap by a head from Spiorad Saoirse.
O’Donoghue said: “I got a little bit impeded jumping out but he hasn’t run for a long time and he’s entitled to be a little bit rusty. I just rode a race then and we went a nice even pace and we kept picking up every furlong.
“He got very unbalanced with me turning in — it’s a track that takes a little bit of experience and I thought that if I hit him, as we raced down to the furlong marker, I’d unbalance him even more.
“I’d have taken a beating for him to gain more long-term, but in fairness he did it well and he’s one that Jessie has always liked.
“It’s nice to see him go and win after a long time off.”
