Bahrain Turf Series: enjoy the penultimate round of races from 11.30am on Friday live on Racing TV!
A top-class card marks one of the big days in the Bahrain calendar on Friday as the penultimate round of the Bahrain Turf Series is complemented by the His Royal Highness The Crown Prince's Cup with all the action live on Racing TV.
The Crown Prince's Cup over 1m 2f (2000m) is an internationally-recognised Listed race and is one of the principal races in the Kingdom alongside the Bahrain International Trophy in November and His Majesty The King's Cup in March. Fioday's race is sponsored by Howden, the specialist equine insurance provider, with the pasrtnership now in its second year.
His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Chairman of The Bahrain Turf Club, said: “I would like to thank Howden for their continued support of His Royal Highness The Crown Prince’s Cup. The continued advancement of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s horse racing sector is highlighted by the support from a renowned international sponsor.
“I would also like to thank His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for Godolphin’s ongoing support. The feature of top-quality horses, trained by Britain’s Champion trainer Charlie Appleby, in the Bahrain Turf Series and The Crown Prince’s Cup, raises the quality of Bahrain’s horse racing competitions and highlights the importance of further growing the sector at an international level.”

The Crown Prince’s Cup boasts a very high-class field this year with a declared field of 15 runners comprised of both local and internationally-trained contenders, with Warren Point - last seen in winning action at Kempton last October - lining up for Godolphin in the big race.
“Warren Point is in great shape, his form is over 1m 2f and 1m 4f and here he is dropping back to 1m 2f," said trainer Charlie Appleby.
"He is drawn sensibly enough (5) and they will go a good gallop which should suit him - if not, he is quite happy to make his own gallop. With what he has achieved to date he should be very competitive.
"As always, it is exciting to have runners in Bahrain and hopefully we can walk away with a winner - or two!”
Lucander, trained by George Baker and a winner over 1m 2f in the opening Bahrain Turf Series race, plus the Roger Fell-trained Marie’s Diamond make up the international challenge.
Allan Smith on the importance of The Crown Prince's Cup and all the details on his three-pronged challenge this time
Allan Smith is one of the leading trainers in the Kingdom and he is no stranger to readying horses for the big days in the Bahrain calendar, relying on three contenders in The Crown Prince's Cup this time.
Smith said: “I’ve got Byline who we’re stepping up in trip.
He’s been running over a mile for the last couple of seasons but he’s always looked to me as though he is crying out for a bit further. He ran over 1800m (nine furlongs) last time in the Turf Series race, and he just got a bit far out of his ground. He had to come from too far back and he finished fourth. He was still finishing and running on, so if we can get a handier position with him early on we fancy him a lot.”
On Recovery Run and Glen Savage, he added: “Since the last time he raced he has been castrated so we’re hoping that has turned him around a little bit. He has come through it very good and he seems a lot happier.
"Then we’ve got Glen Savage who is a good horse who won last time over 2800m, but he’s still acclimatising and he’s been doing some nice work. We’re very happy with him and he’s a nice horse, we just need a bit of luck in-running.”
Competition building in Bahrain Turf Series
Appleby has his first runner in this season
The penultimate round of this season's series gets under way on Friday with two more £60,000 handicaps, The Anchorman Cup over nine furlongs (1800m) and The Hawar Cup over a straight six furlongs (1200m).
Godolphin are represented in The Anchorman Cup by King Of Conquest in a field of 16. The four-year-old won last time out and trainer Charlie Appleby believes this step-up in trip will bring about further improvement.
"Nine furlongs should be his ideal trip," said Appleby. "He is drawn 10 and, with what he has achieved to date, you’d hope he will be very competitive with conditions that will suit him.”
A field of 18 go to post in The Hawar Cup and the George Baker-trained Watchya will bid to go one better having finished second last time out on his Bahrain debut.
Andrea Atzeni takes the ride and said: “The vibes are good and apparently he’s been working well. If he turns up he could be very hard to beat.”
The three feature races will be live on Racing TV from 11.30am on Friday. The Anchorman Cup (11:45am) precedes The Hawar Cup (12:15pm), followed by The Crown Prince’s Cup (12:45pm).
Runner-by-runner guides for Friday's action
Anchorman Cup
1.
What A Welcome
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Ex-Patrick Chamings. Highly consistent and likeable type who rarely runs a bad race but his two placed efforts in Turf Series races this season see him carry top-weight. Drop back down in trip also a concern.
2.
Classical Wave
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Successful in this race last year but hasn’t progressed since then. Back down to a workable mark but needs to overcome a wide draw.
3.
Coolagh Forest
(Jaleel Al Mallah) - Consistent type but has failed to win in over two years and looks quite exposed compared to his rivals.
4.
Pensiero D’Amore
(Mohammed Hasan) - Ex-Marco Botti. Connections rolled the dice and threw him into the G3 Bahrain International Trophy on Bahraini debut but only beat one rival home before finishing last over a mile on his next start. Very wide draw and hard to be confident about his chances.
5.
Arctic Emperor
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Ex-Archie Watson. He has taken a bit of time to come to hand in Bahrain but stormed to victory by over eight lengths over a mile and half two weeks ago. He drops back down in trip but is the choice of Neil Callan which is a big positive.
6.
King Of Conquest
(Charlie Appleby)- Godolphin’s first runner in this year’s Bahrain Turf Series. Took a while to get going over eight and a half furlongs at Wolverhampton at the end of November but was very strong at the finish. This trip should be perfect for him and he rates as a likely winner.
7.
Merlin’s Beard
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Ex-Richard Hughes. All of his wins in the UK came over much further than this and a watching brief on his Bahraini debut seems sensible.
8.
Longbourn
(Ross O’Sullivan) - Seven-year-old made his Bahraini debut three weeks ago when finishing 10th behind The Covex Kid over course and distance. Dropped 1lb and would be no surprise to see him improve from that run.
9.
Grigadale
(Ali Abdulmajeed) - Ex-David Barron. Won his final two starts in the UK before winning twice in Bahrain. He ran respectably behind Lucander in the Turf Series in December but hasn’t been seen since. Overlooked by both Neil Callan and Liam Keniry.
10.
Mark Of Respect
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Ex-Jonathan Portman. He has run well in both starts, including when winning last week. Up 6lb for that narrow win but should be competitive again.
11.
Knight Of Honour
(Richard Fahey) - Ex-John & Thady Gosden and won on stable and Bahraini debut at the beginning of January. Connections will be hoping he can build on that success in what looks a more competitive contest.
12.
Mr Professor
(Alice Haynes) - After being too keen on his Bahraini debut, he showed some promise over this distance three weeks ago but will need to come forward again to feature.
13.
What’s The Story
(Keith Dalgleish) - Although disappointing on his latest start, there were excuses for that sub-par performance and the handicapper has dropped him a further 2lbs. He now races 2lbs lower than his last winning mark and has a good draw.
14.
Dark Lion
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Ex-Roger Varian who finished fourth in the 2020 Coventry Stakes. He has failed to win in eight starts in Bahrain and this looks another tough ask.
15.
Inigo Jones
(Jamie Osborne) - He ran a brilliant race from the front to finish third behind The Covex Kid at the end of December over 1m2f. The drop back to 1m1f will suit and he should run another big race off the same mark.
16.
Zymyran
(Ali Jan) - Ex-David Simcock. He finished second behind Zagato on the final day of last season’s Bahrain Turf Series. Finished a well beaten fourth on his return to the track in December. A return to his best will see him go close.
Predicted 1-2-3: 1. King Of Conquest 2. Inigo Jones 3. Arctic Emperor
Hawar Cup
1.
Fighter Pilot
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Ex-Kevin Ryan. A very capable sprinter but after two comprehensive victories has looked as though his handicap mark is high enough.
2.
Ocean Star
(Mohammed Hasan) - Ex-Archie Watson. Prolific sprinter who is now rated 29lbs higher than his lowest mark in Bahrain. Like Fighter Pilot, the impression is that he could be vulnerable to something less exposed.
3.
First Edition
(Allan Smith) - Ex-Clive Cox. A smart sprinter in Bahrain who rarely runs a bad race. Passed over once again by Paul Hanagan, however.
4.
Deep Intrigue
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Victorious in last year’s Bahrain Turf Series but hasn’t shown any form since.
5.
Nomadic Empire
(David O’Meara) - He has flourished in this year’s Turf Series and it would be no surprise to see him back in the winners’ enclosure.
6.
Wowzers
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Ex-Clive Cox. Raised 8lbs for winning over this trip two weeks ago when ridden by 7lb claimer. Tough ask to defy this added weight in more competitive contest.
7.
Kinks
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Ex-Mick Channon. Finished fourth behind Wowzers two weeks ago and is capable on his day but consistency isn’t his strong point.
8.
Pure Dreamer
(Allan Smith) - Ex-Richard Hannon. He built on his 10th place to finish second on his latest start. Paul Hanagan clearly believes in him and would be dangerous to rule out.
9.
Soldier’s Minute
(Keith Dalgleish) -The handicapper has dropped him 2lbs for finishing fifth behind Dark Shadow over this trip and this looks a good opportunity for him to get off the mark in Bahrain.
10.
Watchya
(George Baker) - He finished an excellent second behind Dark Shadow and was raised 4lbs for that effort. A repeat performance would see him go very close.
11.
Inveigle
(Allan Smith) - Ex-Michael Bell. Finally got off the mark in Bahrain on his penultimate start. Failed to overcome subsequent 9lb rise on latest start and looks up against it here.
12.
Dairerin
(Jaber Ramadhan) - Ex-Jessica Harrington. Won well on his Bahraini debut and has been raised 6lbs for that win. He is only four and further progression can not be ruled out.
13.
Amaan
(Talal Al Alawi) - Ex-Simon & Ed Crisford. He got off the mark in Bahrain in great style at the third time of asking but has been hiked up 12lbs by the handicapper as a result. This is altogether a harder race.
14.
Devaste
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Ex-TJ Kent. He has won his sole start in Bahrain, powering up the middle of the track to win by half a length. This is a higher quality of race but he can’t be ruled out.
15.
Teenar
(Hussain Aldaimi) - Ex-Richard Fahey. He has failed to show much form of late and it’s hard to see him going close.
16.
Laieth
(Hesham Al Haddad) - No win in 20 starts since May 2019 and is unlikely to trouble the principals.
17.
Khunan
(Richard Fahey) - Useful on his day, including a second in the G2 Richmond Stakes at Goodwood, but he hasn’t shown much on two starts in Bahrain. Connections have applied blinkers to try and bring back the spark.
18.
Neptunian
(Abdulla Kuwaiti) - Ex-Freddie & Martyn Meade. He made a solid start to life in Bahrain finishing seventh in a strong race but will need to improve significantly from that run to feature here.
Predicted 1-2-3 1. Watchya 2. Dairerin 3. Soldier’s Minute
The Crown Prince’s Cup (Sponsored by Howden)
1.
Warren Point
(Charlie Appleby) - Fascinating Godolphin raider. He didn’t run at two but progressed rapidly through his three-year-old career which culminated in an impressive Listed victory on his latest start at Kempton. Shoulders a 3lb penalty for that success but is sure to be involved in the finish.
2.
Zagato
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Ex-John & Thady Gosden. Last year’s King’s Cup winner returned with a satisfactory third in a Bahrain Turf Series conditions race three weeks ago. He should strip fitter this time round and holds an obvious chance despite a 3lb penalty.
3.
Byline
(Allan Smith) - Ex-Kevin Ryan. The choice of Paul Hanagan. Prolific winner in Bahrain over a mile and landed a hat-trick at the start of December before finishing fourth behind The Covex Kid last time over 1m1f. Up in trip again but a bit to find with some of these.
4.
Encourage
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Ex-Roger Charlton. He has proved very useful over 1m4f including a second behind Zagato in last year’s King’s Cup. The drop down to 1m2f isn’t a positive however, and he’s been passed over by Neil Callan.
5.
Forbidden Land
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Ex-Richard Hannon. He hasn’t shown anything like the form required to land a blow in a race like this.
6.
Glen Savage
(Allan Smith) - Ex-John & Thady Gosden. An impressive winner of a 1m6f handicap on only his second start in Bahrain. He has useful form back in the UK but probably rates as a place chance at best.
7.
Goemon
(Haider Ebrahim) - Ex-Kevin Philipart De Foy. He beat a small albeit useful field on his Bahraini debut over 1m3f, but this is tougher and he’ll have to raise his game considerably.
8.
Lucander
(George Baker) - Impressive winner in the opening Bahrain Turf Series fixture. He was too keen to do himself justice when finishing fifth behind four race rivals on his latest start but if settling better, he’s got a chance.
9.
Marie’s Diamond
(Roger Fell) - Very likeable horse who rarely runs a bad race but it’s hard to be confident he’ll reverse the form with the likes of The Covex Kid and Zagato.
10.
Port Lions
(Fawzi Nass) - Ex-Godolphin. He won this race in 2020 but has only run twice since and hasn’t been seen since the 2020 Bahrain International Trophy. Watching brief on his return.
11.
Prince Elzaam
(Taleb Ali) - Ex-David O’Meara. He ran his best race of the season upped in trip to 1m1f last time out and connections will be hoping this extra furlong will bring out further improvement.
12.
Recovery Run
(Allan Smith) - Ex-Andrew Balding. He stormed to a 21-length victory on his Bahraini debut last season but has failed to win since. Dropped in trip which might suit this keen going sort.
13.
Taqaareer
(Mohammed Hasan) - Ex-John & Thady Gosden. This son of Frankel won a weak conditions race over 1m1f on his penultimate start but will find this race altogether harder to win.
14.
Tawaareq
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Ex-Sir Michael Stoute. High-class performer over middle distances. He was second in this race last year and returned from a long absence to finish an eye-catching second to The Covex Kid on his latest start. He rates as one of the likelier winners.
15.
The Covex Kid
(Hesham Al Haddad) - Ex-Amy Murphy. He has proved an incredible revelation for connections since moving to Bahrain. He arrived rated 80 and is now rated 108 after four consecutive wins where he’s barely come out of third gear. He could be tough to beat again.
Predicted 1-2-3 1. Tawaareq 2. The Covex Kid 3. Zagato
