George Baker and David O’Meara celebrated valuable, big-race success with a victory apiece on the opening day of the 2022/23 Bahrain Turf Series.
Locally-trained horses won nine of the 10 races in last season’s Bahrain Turf Series but the opening race of this season, the Al Muharraq Cup, went the way of
Lucander.
Now trained by George Baker, Lucander was last seen when finishing eighth in the Cambridgeshire for Ralph Becket and, on this first start for connections, stormed clear to win by 5½-lengths with What A Welcome in second and Arctic Emperor in third.
Unsuccessful with two horses in last season’s Bahrain Turf Series, George Baker returned to Bahrain with three horses and has quickly been rewarded.
Representing her husband, an overjoyed Candida Baker said post-race: “We came here last year and we learnt very early on that you don’t bring hold up horses here. We bought horses that we hoped would be much better suited.
"We are heavily invested in Bahrain and the racing here. The Bahraini trainers are very hard to beat so we were delighted to win with Lucander. I felt sick this morning, luckily the pressure is now massively off!”
Pat Cosgrave flew over from Dubai to ride for Baker and was impressed with Lucander’s performance. He said: “I hadn’t sat on him before but the way he quickened and put the race to bed shows he has a big engine. I think on a going day he is pretty smart.
"I thought we went quite quickly and I was a bit further back than I wanted to be but I couldn’t go much faster so I sat and let him find his feet. He came good for me about halfway and then down into the straight he came alive. He won well in the end."
In the second Bahrain Turf Series race of the day, the £60,000 Al Manama Cup, the David O’Meara-trained
Nomadic Empire was a popular winner for local owner Al Mohamediya Racing. Their retained rider Neil Callan, who won two Bahrain Turf Series races last season, kicked off this year’s Turf Series with a well-timed ride to get the better of Instinctive Move in an exciting finish.
Callan was very taken by Nomadic Empire, saying: “He has no shortage of ability. I think he’s almost bordering on a Group horse. He had great form last summer in England and when I rode him in the Portland Handicap, he gave me some feel!
"These races in Bahrain are run at an endless pace from start to finish which really suited him. His form was a bit up and down in England which meant that he has been creeping down the handicap.”
Callan paid tribute to David O’Meara, who was having his first runner in Bahrain since Lord Glitter’s memorable triumph in the 2021 Bahrain International Trophy.
He said: “David sent him out here fresh and put cheekpieces on which worked very well. I think he can carry on progressing. We know the races suit him out here and we know he can go six furlongs too.
"His Highness Shaikh Sultan and his family are very loyal owners and great people to ride for, so I’m delighted to win a big race for them."

Not only was it unusual to see morning racing on the July course at Newmarket, the feature Empress Fillies’ Stakes ended in a dead-heat as the judge was unable to split Havana Sprite and Glorious Game.
With the start time of the fixture brought forward because of the heatwave, Hugo Palmer’s Glorious Game went into the Listed contest on the back of just one run, a win at Windsor, while James Tate’s Havana Sprite (100-30) was having the fourth start of her career.
It was Charlie Johnston’s 70-rated The Can Can Queen who put the pace to the race and on meeting the rising ground she was proving tough to pass.
Glorious Game (7-4 favourite) had been under pressure for some time, but was finding for Oisin Murphy and while Havana Sprite (100-30) hit the front looking sure to prevail, Glorious Game battled back to join her right on the line.
Tate said: “She’s actually my first horse for Valmont (owners) so to win a Listed race for them is fantastic.
“She travelled so well on the step up to six furlongs, Hector (Crouch) gave her a great ride and we certainly don’t mind sharing the spoils.
“I was half-watching by other runner (Beauty Box) who hadn’t run very well and I was just pleased she was in the shake-up. To be honest I thought she’d just held on, but then you start to doubt yourself. When it takes that long the dead-heat always comes in.
“I think a quick six is her ideal so while it would be a big step up, something like the Lowther, a flat, quick six at York, would suit her. I’m sure a stiff five would be fine or there’s a few fillies’ Group Threes in France as the tracks are flat over there.”

Fresh from a big week at Royal Ascot, Joseph O’Brien was in Group-winning form closer to home on Wednesday, as Rebel Moon took the Al Shira’aa Racing Irish EBF Jannah Rose Stakes at Naas.
A daughter of Lope De Vega and owned by the sponsors, her promising debut victory at Gowran in April saw stablemate Johanna Walsh in third – form well advertised by the latter going on to be second in the Ribblesdale at the Royal meeting.
Sent off at 11-4 for this Group Three affair in which Aidan O’Brien’s Oaks fifth Cameo was the 5-4 favourite, Dylan Browne McMonagle’s mount overhauled the Noel Meade-trained Caught U Sleeping with a neck to spare at the line.
“We’re delighted with her,” said O’Brien.
“She did well to win on debut and the form has obviously worked out well. We just had a little hold up with her after that race so we missed a little bit of time.
“This was an obvious target for her, given the ownership.
“It was a lovely ride from Dylan. She looked green still in the race and I think there is a lot to come from her, hopefully.
“The second has good form and she probably got first run on us, and she’s obviously race-fit while we missed time.
“It’s tough to run a horse down here when they get away from you like that and the fractions were steady enough through the race.
“I think she’s won today from having a bit of class. I think, hopefully, that we are still scratching the surface.
“She has some nice options in France as well as in Ireland.”

Phillip Makin completed the rare feat of both riding and training the winner of the Stablemate By Agma Carlisle Bell after saddling Priapos to win the historic prize.
The £30,000 contest is one of the Cumbrian track’s most prestigious races, with the two bells on offer to the winner reputed to be the oldest sporting trophy in the world, having first been presented in 1599 when Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne.
Makin was victorious in the saddle aboard the Keith Dalgleish-trained Edgar Balthazar 10 years ago and got his name on the winner’s board again, as recent course and distance winner Priapos (12-1) got the better of a duel with 9-4 favourite Leadenhall by half a length.
