I am looking forward to the Breeders’ Cup this weekend and in particular the Breeders’ Cup Classic on the dirt.
It features Roaring Lion, whose superb season on the turf will not be tarnished whatever happens.
The task before him should not be underestimated in any way. He is not bred to handle dirt, moves like a turf horse and is a cruise and quicken type which is not what is needed on dirt.
Added to this he is up against a stellar field of top class dirt performers.
His only chance is to jump sharply from stall 2 and then sit outside the leaders out of the kickback. If he misses the kick by a split second his task becomes much harder.
I think he has little chance of success but Qatar Racing Ltd should be given full marks for their enterprise in embracing international racing.
It is the start of the Meydan season today with a decent domestic card. I will not be playing though as it’s best to work out how the dirt track is playing before we get involved. Thus, I have four domestic selections for you.
This easy point-to-point winner has been found a very winnable opportunity on his debut under Rules.
His point success was emphatic and he has joined the in-form team of Alan King.
Opposition is thin on the ground in terms of tangible form and even though he will be a short price he should get favourite backers off to a winning start on a card that is littered with shorties.
This horse is a tough and classy performer with an excellent record at this track.
He ran a blinder at York last time out and it looks like he will get a good set up here with the useful Salateen assured to set a decent gallop.
I expect Kimberella to pounce late under the useful claimed Connor Murtagh, who takes a handy 5lb off his back.
This Listed race forms part of an excellent card at
Lingfield on Thursday and this filly can outclass her field.
She has won two of her three starts on the all-weather and is in good form coming into the race.
Her recent second at Newmarket has been franked, with the third having gone on to win a Listed race at Chantilly.
James Doyle knows her well and William Haggas has been striking at 19 percent in the last two weeks, which increases confidence in this filly’s chances.
This filly is sent to Lingfield by Willie Mullins to contest this Listed event and we should take the hint.
She failed to stay in the Cesarewitch last time out, but before that she ran a blinder at Leopardstown in defeat to stable companion Limini.
Her hold-up style should be ideally suited to a track that generally favours closers and Jason Watson is an excellent booking. She is 100-30 at the time of writing, which seems very fair to me.
