It’s time to end a modest run of late here in my
Sunday column. Losing streaks are part of the game but shouldn’t change your methods or effect your thinking.
I have four selections and you can watch how they all fare on Racing TV.
1.10 Listowel: The Acropolis
Aidan O’Brien tends to leave plenty to work on when it comes to campaigning his two-year-olds and on his debut this son of Churchill flashed plenty of ability, while at the same time looking to be a work in progress.
He was considerately handled by Ryan Moore, finishing fourth in a good looking maiden. His sire was beaten in that same race at the Curragh in 2016 before taking a huge step forward winning the Chesham at Royal Ascot on his next start. I expect The Acropolis to make similar progression.
1.50 Kilbeggan: Corran Cross
Shaped as if he was very much in need of the run when returning to action after a four-month lay-off last time out.
He travelled well in what was a steadily run race and was still in with a winning chance before weakening before the last, where he made a significant error.
He will strip fitter and sharper for that plus has the bonus of the useful Jordan Gainford claiming 4lb off his back. He looks sure to go close.
2.25 Kilbeggan: Ruaille Buaille
Back in calmer waters against her own sex, this mare should be hard to beat. She shaped pretty well in a hot grade B handicap hurdle last time out and before that looked as if she was coming into form when third in a handicap hurdle at Fairyhouse.
She has clearly been hard to train, with several breaks between runs on her CV, but this represents a tremendous opportunity to gain her third career success. Trainer Willie Mullins is in red hot form and this should be another winner for him.
3.30 Goodwood: Lydford
Closely related to Big Orange, Lydford looks absolutely certain to benefit from stepping up in trip to two miles.
His latest run, over 12 furlongs, was most encouraging. In a steadily run race he stayed on strongly to finish fourth in what was a most competitive handicap.
There was simply not enough of an emphasis on stamina for him that day, but now he gets the trip that his pedigree demands and is potentially very well treated off a mark of 84.
East Asia is a major threat but at around 7-2 Lydford will do for me.
