Angus McNae's top tips for Boxing Day: Bank on Bobby at Wetherby

I hope you all have a fabulous Christmas Day and are ready for a superb day of sport on Boxing Day.
The Ladbrokes King George VI Chase at Kempton takes centre-stage and I have a selection in that race along with three others.
I'm looking forward to seeing Ferny Hollow and Sir Gerhard in action among plenty of others over Christmas, although both are bound to be short prices.
Willie Mullins is unleashing his big guns now and you could do worse than follow all of his runners at Leopardstown on Boxing Day. I am particularly keen on Sir Gerhard, who makes his hurdling debut after proving himself to be a top class bumper performer.
The Champion Bumper winner is no bigger than 4-9, but I take him to make a comfortable winning start to his hurdling career before going on to bigger things. The trio I have in mind for betting purposes are no shorter than 13-2.
2.10 Wetherby: Good Boy Bobby at 13-2 with William Hill
Nigel and Sam Twiston–Davies venture to Wetherby and can land the feature race, the William Hill Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase, with Good Boy Bobby.
He won here at Wetherby two starts ago before finishing an excellent second in a very strongly run race at Newcastle. That effort showed that he is effective at the trip of three miles, and it was a very deep race.
This is competitive, too, but he is more than capable in this grade and I think the fact that Sam travels here rather than ride elsewhere is significant.
His father has a 20 percent strike rate with his runners at this track and that compare to a seasonal strike rate which is usually around 15 percent, so it is clearly a course where he does well.
3.05 Kempton: Asterion Forlonge at 7-1 with bet365 and Wiliam Hill

At 7-1, I am going to take chance that this horse puts it all together and fulfils all of his potential as a chaser.
He was a high-class hurdler, and he has flashed plenty of ability over fences even if he has been prone to errors. His past two starts suggest to me that he retains all of the ability he showed over hurdles and is improving as a chaser.
In April, he posted a very useful handicap performance winning by 14 lengths of a mark of 152. On his return this term, he ran in the Grade One John Durkan at Punchestown and was travelling really well only to unseat his rider three out.
He might well have won that race, beating Allaho in the process if he had stood up. The step up to three miles here may bring about more improvement and, importantly, he is going right-handed, much his preferred way round.
If he can cut out the errors he should run really well and, while this is going to test his jumping, it should be noted that he jumped fluently before that one costly error in the John Durkan.

3.40 Kempton: Earlofthecotswolds at 13-2 with William Hill
This horse is on a roll, having won his last two starts and the 13-2 that is available about him is a fair price. If you want a safety net, Sky Bet go 6-1 and offer four places.
He was impressive when winning at Newbury last time out doing just enough on the run–in to win, suggesting that there was a fair bit in the tank.
He has gone up 5lb for that success, but Zac Baker now takes over in the saddle and his 3lb claim offsets that rise in the weights.
I think that it is fair to say this horse is in the form of his life and this represents an excellent chance for him to complete the hat-trick. His recent upsurge in form has come when wearing cheekpieces and they are retained here.
He looks overpriced and should be supported to go in again. It should also be noted that, in the future, he would be able to return to chasing off a lower mark.

Barry Connell chats to Donn McClean about Marine Nationale's Champion Chase defence & 33/1 dark horse Eachtotheirown who will line up in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle.
The trainer remains confident Marine Nationale will put up a staunch defence his crown in the BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham next month.
The trainer and owner has never been shy in talking up his pride and joy and he has twice lived up to the billing at Prestbury Park, winning the 2023 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle before clinching the two-mile chasing crown with a sensational 18-length victory last March.
He has had to make do with the runner-up spot on two outings at Leopardstown this season, but the nine-year-old would almost certainly have won over Christmas but for a jolting early error – and Connell is relishing a rematch with his recent Dublin Racing Festival conqueror Majborough in the Cotswolds.
“He’s been to Cheltenham twice, he’s won twice and hasn’t come off the bridle twice.
“I live near Leopardstown and in the last 25 years I’ve never seen rain like we had before the Dublin Racing Festival. It’s the heaviest ground I’ve ever seen up there and the easiest thing would have been not to run him, but I didn’t think it would do him any harm.
“He never got into a rhythm in the early part of the race and was out of his comfort zone, but to his credit when they slowed it down halfway down the back he started to get back into it again.
“I think we’ll see a different horse again in March. That is not just my opinion, that is backed up by the form book when you look at what he does when he goes there every year.
“He’s nine years of age and in the prime of his life and we’re looking forward to going back there.”

Marine Nationale has 19 lengths to find with Majborough on their Dublin Chase clash, but while Connell respects the threat posed by the Willie Mullins-trained gelding, he feels there are plenty of reasons to believe his stable star can bridge the gap at the Festival.
“Majborough put in an excellent performance and I think his jump index was absolutely off the radar – not only did he not make a mistake, but he met every fence spot-on,” he continued.
“If you look at official ratings, Majborough is rated 174 and we were 170 and have dropped 1lb to 169. He’s run to 174 in perfect conditions, making no mistake and on a galloping track that suits him.
“On the day in Leopardstown we were beaten 19 lengths and you would say ‘how are we going to reverse that’?, but they were extreme conditions and we know our horse loves Cheltenham.
“He rode out this morning, it’s the first day he’s had a saddle on him since Leopardstown, he’s eating his hay and he’s eating his food and there’s not a bother on him, so we haven’t done any damage.
“On official ratings we’ve 5lb to make up and I hope it will be a different story come Cheltenham.”
