Joe Tizzard is keen to see where Alexei stands in the bigger picture when he runs in the BetMGM Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton on Saturday.
The current champion hurdler Golden Ace is one of six potential rivals for the Greatwood Hurdle winner, who has improved out of all recognition this season.
While his winning run was brought to an end at Ascot last time out under 12st, the two who finished in front of him, Wilful and Hot Fuss, fought out the finish of a valuable race at Windsor with the placings reversed.
“It think the meeting will be fine, there’s a fair bit of rain coming through on Monday but it dries up before the end of the week,” said Tizzard of the Wincanton fixture, with the ground currently described as heavy.
“It will be soft old ground but he’ll be fine, it was pretty soft when he won the Greatwood so we’re all systems go for Wincanton on Saturday.
“His Ascot race couldn’t have worked out better. He had 12st that day yet the only two who finished in front of him, Wilful and Hot Fuss, both came out and franked the form at Windsor when they were first and second again.
“Arguably you could say that was as good a run as his Greatwood run. He went up another 1lb so it meant it was another career best.
“We’ve freshened him up a bit, this has always been the plan so we’ll stick with it.
“It will be nice to see where we are with everything if Golden Ace runs.”
Along with Golden Ace, Potters Charm, Intellotto, Kateira, Rubaud and Secret Squirrel are his potential opponents.
