Derby winner Adayar to miss Prince of Wales’s return

Adayar has been ruled out of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Last year’s Derby and King George hero had been due to make his four-year-old bow in the Coronation Cup at Epsom next week, but a minor setback put those plans on hold.
Attention instead switched to the Royal meeting, but the Charlie Appleby-trained Frankel colt will not be ready in time.
“The team at Moulton Paddocks have decided to bypass Royal Ascot with Adayar,” Appleby said in a tweet from the Godolphin account.
“This is to give him more time to bounce back to full fitness following the minor setback which saw him taken out of the Coronation Cup.”
Following the news, Coral cut brilliant Brigadier Gerard winner Bay Bridge to 9-4 for the Prince of Wales’s, ahead of Japanese ace Shahryar at 3-1 and Mishriff (9-2).

Jockey Charlie Deutsch has endured a nightmare season with the horses from the Venetia Williams not finding their feet all year. Grand Annual success at 66/1 at the Cheltenham Festival has salvaged the campaign, though, and Deutsch makes for great listening here - along with daughter Winnie!

Day 2 Highlights | Cheltenham Festival 2026 | Racing TV

An absorbing day of action on day two of the 2026 Cheltenham Festival as Irish-trained runners dominated proceedings. Closutton maestro Willie Mullins enjoyed a Grade One treble courtesy of King Rasko Grey (Turners Novices' Hurdle), Kitzbuhel (Brown Advisory Novices' Chase) and Il Etait Temps (BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase). Irish Champion Flat jockey Colin Keane recorded his first Cheltenham Festival winner aboard The Mourne Rambler in the Champion Bumper whilst Gavin Cromwell also got on the scoresheet as Final Orders landed the Cross Country. There were two British-trained winners in the handicaps as the well-supported Jingko Blue landed the BetMGM Cup for Nicky Henderson and James Bowen, whilst 66/1 Mortator caused a stir with a thirlling win in the Debenhams Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup Handicap Chase, denying Jazzy Matty a Festival hat-trick in the process. Champion Flat jockey Keane wins Champion Bumper | Full Race | Cheltenham Festival 2026 | Racing TV

Six-time Irish champion Flat jockey Colin Keane is now also a Cheltenham Festival winning-rider after expertly guiding The Mourne Rambler to success in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper. Trained by Noel Meade, the 15-2 chance had impressed at Leopardstown over the Christmas period, with his handler calling on the services of a man whom he had enjoyed Group One success with on the level for the five-year-old’s big date with Prestbury park. Chris Gordon’s Bass Hunter, the leading British-trained contender, attempted to make all as he did at Ascot in December in the hands of the trainer’s son, Freddie. However, the strong Irish pursuit loomed heading down hill, with Keane aboard The Mourne Rambler one of those weaving his way through traffic into a prime position to strike. Swinging the bend for home the Juddmonte number one asked his mount for extra and the five-year-old turned on the after burners to storm up the Cheltenham hill and add Festival success to the many big races the pilot has landed around the world. It is a victory that caps a fine few days for Keane having got engaged to Ger Lyons’ daughter Kerri on Sunday. He said: “It’s up there with my career highlights, I’m fortunate enough to have had some great days and this was a bucket list item of mine to tick off – just riding here, never mind winning – so this is brilliant. “Riding in this wasn’t on my mind until Noel rang me and how often do you get the opportunity to ride in a race like this, as trainers have their jockeys. When Noel rang me, it was something I grabbed with both hands and an easy ‘yes’. “He rang me about two weeks ago and I was riding at Dundalk and had a missed call off him and when I rang him back he asked if I would be interested and I said ‘of course’. I just needed to get my licence sorted and now the rest is history. “I suppose the nerves were a little different walking out in front of a crowd like that, it’s a different level really and Ascot can be busy, but this is some atmosphere.” Keane’s appearance at the Cheltenham Festival comes despite being caught up in the travel days caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East having been out in Dubai to ride at Meydan on the Super Saturday card that went ahead amidst rising tensions in the region. “I was stuck out in Dubai for a few days going insane and I suppose the difficult part was not knowing when I was getting home,” added Keane, who joins Jamie Spencer – who won this same race with Pizarro in 2002 – as a Cheltenham Festival-winning Flat jockey. “The first few days were rough, but then you got used to it and it was just a case of flights being cancelled then you would book on another one and that would get cancelled. Thankfully we all got home.” It was a welcome return to the Festival winner’s enclosure for Meath-based Meade, who was successful at the meeting for the seventh time having landed his first success since Jeff Kidder in 2021. Meade said: “It’s marvellous and we’ve only got around 15 jumpers so it’s great to be back in this winner’s enclosure. “It’s probably about a third of what we used to have and we have around 45 Flat horses, but this is just great. “I have had all his family and he was bred by a very good friend of mine from my childhood, Christopher McKeever. This fellow is the best of him and I had a feeling he would handle the ground as he is light. “I’d say he has plenty of speed so if he’s back here next year it would be over two miles. His jumping needs some ironing out but we can work on that now.” Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits! 66/1! Mortator delivers in Grand Annual thriller | Full Race | Cheltenham Festival 2026 | Racing TV

Martator (66/1) caused the biggest shock of the 2026 Cheltenham Festival so far when getting up close home to win the Debenhams Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase by a nose from last year’s winner Jazzy Matty. Successful trainer Venetia Williams said: “I’m pretty speechless, partly because I was screaming so much! I just can’t believe it. We could see he was coming and he was on the wide outside, which was always the plan as he’s only a pony. He met the last few on a great stride and winged them. “We put the half-cup blinkers on, thinking let’s just roll the dice. Charlie rode an amazing race – we just said, ‘Go your own pace, don’t worry about them as they’re going to go a million mph anyway’.” On the goodwill from people following her tough season, she said: “It’s so heartwarming, I can’t tell you.” Winning jockey Charlie Deutsch, holding young daughter Winnie whose mother Meg Jones had led the winner up, said: “The first-time blinkers helped massively and the better ground as well. We were running well at Sandown last time when he just got one of the Railway fences wrong and I came off. The whole way I was getting a very good spin but I didn’t believe I had a chance until I turned in, when I thought ‘Here we go’. His jumping was better on that ground but it’s quite unbelievable. “When you’ve had a season like we’ve had I wasn’t really looking forward to Cheltenham as it’s been disappointment after disappointment and there’s only so much you can take. I was just trying to think race by race and try not to have any sort of memory because it’s the only way to cope with a bad season, but I suppose when you are riding for someone like Venetia she's done it all so you hope that it’s going to come back. Form is temporary isn’t it. “You maybe become a better person and a better rider when you have a bad season because you have to look inwards a lot. I said to Meg the other day that I might be getting better as a raider as I’m having to try harder.” Trainer Cian Collins said of the runner-up Jazzy Matty: “We’re very proud of the horse - he’s unbelievable and we’re very lucky to have him. He runs his race here every year. It’s hard to take, but I’m delighted with the horse. “He just lit up as soon as he came over here and I was very happy going into the race. He ran his race - he jumped so well and never missed a beat, but it’s heart-breaking [finishing such a close second].” Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits!
