Tuesday's best bets: Acclaim can be a Pearl at Musselburgh

Welcome to the first of Racing UK's daily tipping columns, the aim of which is simple – to produce a level-stake profit. Each of us will have different approaches and my personal preference has always been to bet in lower grade races, where I believe there are more errors made in the markets than the better races. Accordingly even on Tuesdays where there are higher quality meetings such as Goodwood next week you are still likely to find the majority of my selections in calmer waters.

At that lower level many horses do not have the ability to win any sort of race, unlike better races where nearly all the participants, given certain sets of circumstances, are capable of winning in a far more competitive arena.

So without further delay here are the four selections for today.

3.15 Musselburgh - PEARL ACCLAIM: Being beaten at odds-on in a seller last time out may seem a pretty unpromising starting point but the Wolverhampton race has worked out a bit better than looked likely at the time and he could be the type that new trainer David Griffiths can rejuvenate. Claimed by Griffiths for £6,000 that day the defeat also meant a further decline in his handicap mark. Apart from one day when he was left in the stalls he has either won or been beaten less than three lengths in five previous runs over course and distance all off considerably higher marks.

5.15 Musselburgh - OUR PLACE IN LOULE: A long-standing maiden but ran right up to his best last time and back in handicap company will have few better chances to get off the mark. The Noel Wilson stable have had several horses run well at big prices recently and he also looks likely to get a soft time on the front end.

5.50 Nottingham - TRANSMITTING: Purchased by Racing UK colleagues Martin and Chris Dixon for a client of Ed Vaughan’s, this looks to be the first time since that move that conditions should suit. Soft ground could be the key for a horse that looks off a reasonable mark and the trainer has found quite a soft-looking event. The son of Man O'War Stakes winner Cacique will stay 12f in time, but the ground should ensure this is a sufficient test of stamina at the trip.

8.50 Nottingham - ABSOLUTE ANGEL: Using pedigrees as a clue as to whether a horse will handle conditions she is encountering for the first time can often prove a good starting point. Progeny of 2001 Abernant Stakes winner Primo Valentino on soft ground have been a regular positive down the years and Absolute Angel could fit the bill at Nottingham. A winner of a bumper on debut Absolute Angel has gained her handicap mark over trips likely to be short of her best and has the application of cheek pieces here to signal intent. Primo Valentino is also the sire of stable star Clever Cookie, who also loves the mud and won first time in cheek pieces. Worth a throw at the stumps, especially if supported in the market.
