When looking to place horse racing bets, there are plenty of different selections and ways to place your chosen wagers, whether that be through single bets or accumulators. One of the available ways to bet on horse racing is through Trixie betting, which is popular among punters and horse racing experts.
You might be wondering what a trixie bet is, which is why we will go through what one of these bets is, how they work, and how you can use these bets alongside
free bets and other strategies to gain value.
What Is A Trixie Bet?
A Trixie bet is a type of multiple bet that involves three selections and a total of four bets, comprising 3 doubles and 1 treble. Unlike other betting strategies, there are no singles involved in a Trixie bet, meaning if you want to return any funds, then at least two of your selections are required to win.
Now that we know what a Trixie bet is, we can start to have a look at real examples of Trixie bets and how they would be placed in horse racing.
Trixie Bet Example
To place a trixie bet, there must be three selections, so let's say you pick three horses on the same day at three different tracks.
•
Horse A in the 1:30 at Ascot
•
Horse B in the 2:00 at Newmarket
•
Horse C in the 2:30 at York
When placing a trixie bet, this is how your bets will look:
•
Double 1: Horse A + Horse B
•
Double 2: Horse A + Horse C
•
Double 3: Horse B + Horse C
•
Treble: Horse A + Horse B + Horse C
So, if you are going to place a trixie bet, you actually have to place 4 bets in total. This means if you are using £5 as your stake, then the total cost of the Trixie is £20.
Why Are Trixie Bets Used?
What makes the Trixie bet so popular is the fact that you do not need all three horses to win to get a return. If only two horses win, one of your doubles will come in, unlike a Treble bet, which would require all three selections to be successful. If all three horses win in a Trixie bet, then the return will be larger, as four bets will have won.
When To Use A Trixie Bet
When you
watch horse racing, you might not know when the best time is to place a Trixie bet, which is why we will go through the best times at which you can place these types of bets. Trixie bets are especially useful when:
•
You fancy three strong chances but aren’t confident enough to put them all in a treble.
•
You want to hedge your risk while still giving yourself upside.
•
You want to boost your value betting strategy by covering combinations.
Some bettors also use each-way trixies, which means that every selection is each way, allowing for horses to return if they finish in place positions. However, this will cost double the amount as 8 bets will be placed instead of 4 bets.
