Champion stayer and leading National Hunt sire
Kayf Tara has died at the age of 28.
After starting life with Sir Michael Stoute, Kayf
Tara was transferred to the care of Godolphin’s Saeed bin Suroor at the start of his four-year-old campaign, eventually bowing out the winner 10 of his 15 career starts, including two Gold Cups and two Irish St Legers.
He retired in 2000, going on to stand as a stallion at Overbury Stud, where he produced a sizeable list of top-class jumps performers and was crowned champion National Hunt sire on 11 occasions.
Thirteen-time winner Thistlecrack is his highest prize money earner to date having landed five Grade Ones, with Alan King’s
Edwardstone his most prominent son in action as he recently took the Tingle Creek at Sandown by nine lengths.
Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Special Tiara was another of his progeny, alongside Irish Gold Cup hero Edwulf and 2011 Hennessy victor Carruthers.
Declining fertility meant the stallion was retired from the covering shed in 2020 and he spent the remaining years of his life in the paddocks at Overbury, where he died peacefully at the age of 28 on Wednesday morning.
Stud manager Simon Sweeting said: “This is a very sad day for all of us at Overbury. Kayf Tara really put us on the map and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been with him through every step of what transpired to be an extraordinary career as a jump stallion, in which he won more championships than any other British National Hunt sire in history.
“I remain immensely grateful to Sheikh Mohammed and the Darley team for entrusting him to us. He’s been such a great servant to the National Hunt game and to Overbury Stud, where he was looked after for most of his time by Dan Matty. We will miss him terribly.”
Sam Bullard, Darley’s director of stallions, added: “We are all very grateful to Simon Sweeting and his team at Overbury for taking such great care of Kayf Tara for all these years, and we are very proud of the enormous contribution he has made to National Hunt racing and breeding in Britain and beyond during that time.”

Causeway showed strength at the finish to follow in the hoofprints of Paddington in the Irish Racing Writers Association Madrid Handicap as Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore enjoyed a treble at Naas.
The Wootton Bassett colt raced in midfield after a slow break, but began to make headway and laid down his challenge at the furlong marker as Moore kept the 13-8 favourite up to his work to hold off Controlled by a head.
The race was won by fellow O’Brien inmate Paddington in 2023 before he went on to win the Irish Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes, Eclipse and Sussex Stakes in an incredible winning streak.
“He was tough and he learned a lot,” said O’Brien. “He took a run last year, he was a little bit lazy. He’ll obviously stay a lot further. Ryan was good on him.
“I think he’ll be very comfortable going a mile and could get further. He’s brave, he stuck his head out.
“He can go into a winners’ race now and we’ll go gentle with him and let him mature away.
“We’ll see how he progresses, there are other horses there for the Classics at the moment.”

First-season trainer Nick Scholfield landed the most valuable success of his career to date when Queenie St Claircaused a 20-1 surprise in the BetWright Herring Queen Series Final Mares’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle at Kelso.
With almost £100,000 in prize-money on offer, the race had attracted Nicky Henderson’s hot favourite Khrisma, who had been aimed at the Cheltenham Festival’s County Hurdle only to miss the cut.
She was still bang in contention when making a bad blunder at the second last and she was pulled up soon after, leaving Queenie St Clair in front to fight it out with Dan Skelton’s First Candidate.
With 5lb conditional jockey Freddie Keighley seen to great effect, she fended off her challenger to win by a length with the pair five lengths clear of Madame La Papillon back in third.
“It’s a magic day, to be honest,” said Scholfield. “It’s been a long-term plan since she won at Wincanton on Boxing Day and we got her qualified at Newbury. It slightly didn’t go to plan when Sean Bowen won on her by 17 lengths at Fontwell and I thought our chance might be gone but thankfully she was still good enough..”
